Frequently Asked Questions
What is hydro-jetting?
Simply put, hydro-jetting is the best way to clean your rig's tanks. It uses specialized equipment to pressurize water to clean your RV holding tanks and the piping from the tanks to the termination valves. Because we do not use chemicals, hydro-jetting is 100% safe for the environment.
Why aren't my tank sensors working correctly?
Your tank sensors are likely working, but not in the way you might expect. Understanding their function is vital to troubleshooting. These sensors are essentially an open electrical circuit designed to be closed by water or other fluids in the tank. When debris becomes stuck on the sensor, the system mistakenly thinks the fluids have completed the circuit. This misinterpretation leads to the sensor lights on your panel indicating the tank is at the level of that specific sensor. I believe this is your RV tanks begging to be cleaned.
Why do my black and grey holding tanks smell so bad?
To truly grasp the importance of this question, it's crucial to fully understand the functions of your RV holding tanks. The black tanks store human waste from toilets, while the grey tanks hold everything else from sinks, showers, and washing machines. While it's no surprise that the black tank can smell unpleasant, many people are shocked to discover that the grey tank often has an even worse odor. The reason for this is that the grey tank contains a mixture of dead skin cells (from bathing), hair, soaps, shampoos, toothpaste, food residue (fats/oils/grease), and certain dish detergents, all of which combine and solidify over time. While some tank treatments can help reduce odors, they can only do so much. It's best to clean out this sludge from your tanks to address the root cause.
What is Struvite?
Struvite is a scale or rock-like crystal that forms in wastewater systems. It is a common culprit behind holding tank issues in RVs, such as clogs, misreading sensors, and unpleasant odors.
Can you unclog my toilet without cleaning my black tank?
The simple answer is no. A clogged toilet is usually a symptom of other concerns. To properly address the problem, we must begin by cleaning your black tank. Then, we will address the toilet clog and follow up with another black tank cleaning. If we are going to work for you, we are going to make sure we do it right!
How often do I need to have my black and grey tanks cleaned?
The frequency of tank cleaning for your RV will depend on your usage. If you use your RV for recreational purposes or only during specific seasons each year, you should have the tanks cleaned every year or two. However, if you live in your RV full-time, it is recommended to have your tanks cleaned at least yearly, or every six months if you spend a lot of time boondocking."a lot of time boondocking.
Do I need to sanitize my black and grey tanks?
No. Sanitizing your freshwater tank is essential as it helps kill bacteria, mold, and other contaminants, ensuring that your water system provides clean and safe water. However, sanitizing your black and grey water-holding tanks is unnecessary. It's essential to use chlorine bleach to sanitize a freshwater tank properly, but doing so will kill the enzymes that help control odors and break down materials in your holding tanks. This will result in spending more time and money restarting the holding tank processes.
Can you clean my tanks if I have a macerator?
Cleaning your tanks will depend on your RV's set-up. If you have a macerating toilet, we can clean your tanks. However, if you have a macerating pump installed between your tank and the termination valve (sewer connection), we cannot clean your tanks.
Prepare for your cleaning
Full Hook-ups Required
You must have access to full hookups at your RV park, campground, or storage unit. The electrical connection needs to be a 20, 30, or 50-amp outlet (shore power). We must also connect to a city water source and an approved sewage dump/drain. If these requirements cannot be met, we will not be able to clean your RV tanks.
Tank Considerations
Holding tanks, piping, and valves must be fully operational unless otherwise discussed when scheduling your appointment. Please rinse and dump your black and grey tanks before we arrive. Verify your sewer hose is connected correctly and free of leaks. Please leave your sewer hose attached to your RV and sewer connection.
To ensure thorough tank cleaning, we need to have a standard RV sewer hose connected to your RV. If your rig is "hard-plumbed" to a sewage or septic system, we won't be able to provide this important service.
Slide-Outs
If your RV has a slide-out over the holding tanks' termination valves (sewer outlet) or is nearby, please retract the slide-out for optimal connection access. This will enhance our ability to provide high-quality tank cleaning services. If this cannot be done, we may take longer to complete the tank cleaning.
tank maintenance
Blue Wolf Mobile RV Services is committed to ensuring that your RV remains in excellent condition for years of enjoyment. A crucial factor in maintaining your holding tanks is to recognize the importance of water. By consistently introducing freshwater into the tanks, you can significantly minimize the risk of encountering common issues.
Toilet considerations
- Remember to use enough water when flushing the toilet. The toilet bowl should be about half full before using it. Once you have done your business (there is no need to be more specific), fill the rest of the bowl with water and then flush it all down. Consider refilling the bowl and flushing it again. Following these steps will frequently help prevent many black tank issues.
- Unlike water, toilet paper is not your friend. Use only the amount of toilet paper you need to accomplish the task at hand.
tank specific actions
Tank Valves:
Ensure that your tank valves are operational and functioning correctly. After emptying your tank, remember to close the valve. Do not leave your tank valves open, even if connected to an appropriate sewer or septic dump system.
Dump Your Tanks:
Since using water is essential, it is recommended that you fill your holding tanks with enough water to help maintain their health before dumping them. This could be between 2/3 (or 3/4, depending on your display) and full. Just be sure not to overfill the tanks, as doing so could cause damage.
After dumping your tanks and closing their valves, add some water to your black water tank. This will help you maintain the health of the black tank and reduce potential issues.
treatments & soaps
Grey Tank
Because your gray tank is filled with water from your sinks, showers, and washing machine, it comes into contact with various materials, especially soaps. It's essential to consider the types of soaps you use and to consider using Dawn Dish Soap for washing dishes. This product is known for breaking down grease.
Black Tank
When it comes to adding a treatment product to your black tank, it's a matter of personal preference. Some may argue for or against it, but ultimately, it's your RV. If you feel it's necessary, feel free to add a tank treatment product. Many RV owners have reported positive results from using Liquified RV Tank Treatment and/or JustScience Tank Treatment.
Maintenance schedule
Once you have had your holding tank professionally cleaned, it is vital to maintain it to ensure years of serviceability. You should fill and dump your tanks appropriately based on your RV usage.
As a proactive RV owner, consider traveling with some water (possibly 1/3 of a tank). This simple step can make a significant difference. The water movement in the tank while traveling will provide a sloshing/washing effect, effectively cleaning your tank as you go.
You should also schedule a regular professional tank cleaning, just like you do to maintain the rest of your RV. If you only use your RV seasonally, consider having the tanks cleaned just before long storage periods.
Remember, we recommend full-time RVers have their tanks cleaned once each year. If you do a lot of boondocking, consider doing it twice yearly. Part-time RVers can extend their cleaning intervals to once every year or two.
